Registration is done on an individual basis and one event at a time. You will receive a confirmation email once your registration payment has been processed. All events are virtual unless noted. If it is a virtual event, you will receive a link to the attend in the confirmation email.

When we commit to collectively discussing fairness, equality, and justice with young children, we begin to envision a world in which not only children but all people are treated with dignity, free from the burden of unfair assumptions based on a single characteristic. It becomes a world where we actively challenge racism and bias every day.

This in-person workshop will dismantle the color-blind assumption and prepare children to work toward justice. This presentation shares concrete ways Montessori guides and classroom educators can support their learners' developing racial, ethnic, and physical identities. Educators will learn how to empower learners, affirm their numerous identities, and challenge pre-prejudice.

Anti-bias Education in Montessori is suitable for primary guides (3-6 year-olds) and elementary guides (6-12 years old) who are beginning to implement the anti-bias education framework.

January 9 – Getting Started
Join us as we investigate Montessori’s thoughts on the development of the Mathematical Mind and how it aids the children in the classroom. The Mathematical Mind begins developing at birth and continues after leaving the Children’s House. Children’s success in the Math area depends upon preliminary developments and optimum start time. This session provides opportunities to have a discussion and ask questions while offering an overview of the groups of Math materials (including reflections on the purposes of each). Additionally, we’ll cover ways to help caregivers understand the Montessori approach to Math.

January 16 – Preparation and Guidance Leads to Success in Math
Several important elements help us determine if and when the child is ready for the next step in the mathematical sequence. The role of the adult is crucial, both in introducing new materials, preparing the child to work independently, and providing opportunities for repetition. We will revisit the importance of moving from concrete to abstract experience, the value of paying attention to the sequence of materials, the contribution of 3-period lessons to introduce new concepts, how to support children who struggle with a particular skill or material to achieve success, and how the Control of Error plays a significant role in Math. Lastly, time will be provided for a discussion and answering questions.

January 23– Keeping the Older Children Engaged
As the children move toward the second plane of development, they experience changes in how they view the world and interact with others which can affect their interest in the materials. As Educators, we can adjust the use of materials so that these children are continuously engaged. We can provide opportunities for older children to work together on some materials initially presented to individual children. For example, two children, at the same developmental level, could work on the addition finger charts if we ensure that both children are advancing their learning. We will also look at ways to introduce details and techniques attractive to older children. Time will be allotted for discussion and questions.

This AMI Orientation Course is recommended for parents, assistants, administrators, and anyone wanting to learn more about Montessori education for children ages 6-12. This 60-hour course consists of a combination of online instructor-led sessions and independent student learning, as well as 9 hours of observation.

This course offers an overview of Montessori developmental theory. Topics specific to the 6-12 course include details of the characteristics of elementary-aged children, collaborating with the children in their work, how to observe and how to use observation to support children, freedom, and responsibility, and supporting independence.

The weekly independent work will consist of hands-on independent activities, guided observation of children, readings, listening to assigned audio files and podcasts, small group discussions with members of the cohort, and watching assigned videos.

Participants completing all required aspects of the course can earn the AMI 6-12 Orientation Course Certificate. Attendees from Oregon can earn hours for ORO(Set I). Attendees from Washington can earn STARS credit.

FREEDOM AND DISCIPLINE
 AMI 3-6 Regional Refresher Course

This will be an in-person refresher course, taking place over two days. During our time together, we will review the definitions of both freedom and discipline from a Montessori point of view. The larger culture has a different view of these terms, and in order for us to implement this theory with the children, we have to fully understand their meaning and the ramifications of both terms.

We will also look at all the elements outside of this theory that support the children’s development so that they can individually develop to the optimum level. For that purpose, we will see how the theory of the Absorbent Mind, Sensitive Periods, Social Development, Movement, Three Levels of Obedience, Control of Error, and other topics contribute to the child’s understanding of freedom and the child’s development of self-discipline.

In the process, we can look at specific ways or techniques to support the children in this development through our interactions with them and our behavior when they need guidance. We will also look closely at our role as the adult in charge and how we can use reflection of situations and our response to ensure that the children are being treated well and equitably.

Each day, we will spend time together covering the information as well as time in reflection and small groups discussing various aspects of this theory that will support a deeper understanding to guide us in working with the children. Not only does this allow participants to hear other people’s thoughts, it also allow attendees to make new connections within the Montessori community.

AMI diploma holders who complete the course earn an AMI Regional Refresher Course Certificate of Completion. Non AMI diploma holders who complete the course earn an AMI Regional Refresher Course Certificate of Attendance.

This series aligns the Montessori materials and activities in the Casa with the Science of Reading, and will help teachers understand how the process of reading develops. We’ll begin with the essential foundations of building background knowledge and phonological awareness, move into the early reading activities and development of essential skills, and conclude with activities and materials to help launch children into “Total Reading”.

This AMI Orientation Course is designed to support adults by providing an orientation to the Montessori approach for 0-3 year olds. This course is ideal for 0-3 Montessori classroom assistants, or any other adult who is interested in gaining more knowledge about Montessori. The course will cover an introduction to the theoretical foundations of Montessori education and practical tips to bring the theory into practice.

During the online synchronous sessions, there will be a combination of video, lecture, discussion, and small group work to explore the history of Montessori education, the developmental characteristics of the child from 0-3, prepared environments, the role of the adults, supporting independence, communication, aids for emotional and social development and observation as the main tool to support the optimal development in children. The course will also help participants to understand the importance of creating environments where the uniqueness of each child is appreciated and diversity in all of its forms is embraced.

Participants will have an additional 30 hours of required distance learning activities and assignments related to the topics introduced in class, as well as needing to complete 9 hours of observation. These activities and assignments will deepen and extend participants’ engagement with the content, and further develop particular skills related to the work of the assistant, such as observation and material making. Distance learning activities will consist of online reading discussions and assignments, writing personal reflections, video assignments, material making, and submission of three essays on topics to be determined by the Trainer.

Additionally, time will be spent on gaining practical skills, such as:

  • How to create opportunities for language in daily interactions

  • Developing skills for observation

  • Building healthy relationships with children

  • Tips for transition times

  • Practical ideas to help children acquire toilet independence

  • How to create an environment with freedom within limits, and much more!

This 60-hour course includes 11 online instructor lead sessions with independent student work between class meetings, and 9 hours of observation to complete the requirements to earn the AMI 3-6 Orientation Course Certificate.

The cohort will be offered an overview of Montessori developmental theory. The topics covered will include, but are not limited to: the history and framework of Montessori education, goals of anti-bias education, young children's cognitive, physical, and language development, preparation of the adult, prepared environments for learning, the importance of observation, supporting independence, and the development of self-discipline and the will.

ln addition, participants will learn and practice spoken language activities and songs to enjoy with 3 -6 year olds.

The online class sessions will be a combination of lecture/discussion, small group work, videos. The additional, asynchronous independent work will consist of readings, reflections, classroom observations, videos, and online discussions. The depth of information will provide participants with a clear overview of Montessori’s revolutionary concept of education.

Participants completing all required aspects of the course can earn the AMI 3-6 Orientation Course Certificate. Attendees from Oregon can earn hours for ORO(Set I). Attendees from Washington can earn STARS credit.
